How does CNC turning work?

CNC turning is a high-precision, computer-controlled manufacturing process for producing rotationally symmetrical components. The workpiece is clamped into a fixture and rotated while a stationary cutting tool removes material. CNC (computerized numerical control) allows complex geometries to be produced with maximum accuracy and repeatability – from single pieces to large series.

Modern manufacturing with combined technologies:

In many cases, so-called turning-milling centers are used today—state-of-the-art machines that, in addition to classic turning, also enable milling operations in a single clamping. This eliminates the need for additional re-clamping, which not only saves time but also increases precision. Such systems allow the complete machining of complex components in a single manufacturing process.

How does 3-axis milling work?

In contrast to CNC turning, CNC milling does not rotate the workpiece, but rather the tool (e.g., a milling cutter, drill, etc.).

In contour milling, for example, the milling cutter usually rotates in what is known as synchronous rotation. This means that it rotates clockwise and also moves clockwise around the contour of the workpiece (to the left of it).

The tool cutting edges remove the material and eject the chips from the exposed chip spaces of the milling cutter. In contrast to counter-rotation milling (to the right of the contour in a counterclockwise direction), the cutting edges are not additionally pressed into the material by the feed, but are gently lifted off. This increases the quality of the workpiece surface and the service life (lifespan) of the tool.

Here’s the crux of the matter. Not only 3 but 5 axes are now moved, either individually or all together. Coordinating them is only possible using CAM and requires considerable computing power and operator experience. This technical marvel makes it possible to create the most complex components.
